Hadhramout Launches Training Workshop on Fish Catch Data Collection to Support Sustainable Fisheries Development

On Sunday, October 5, 2025, a workshop was inaugurated in Mukalla, Hadhramout, to launch a training program on fish catch data collection for fish landing centers. The workshop is part of the activities of the Sustainable Fisheries Development Project in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea, funded by the World Bank through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The training workshop will continue until October 9, 2025.

The workshop includes lectures on the principles and importance of fishery data collection at landing centers, methods and tools for collecting catch data, and fishing gear types and their role in determining actual fishing trends. It also features an introduction to the electronic system for fish catch data entry, along with a final practical field session where participants will conduct hands-on data collection at landing centers to apply what they learned during the workshop.

The opening ceremony was attended by Ghazi Lahmar, Deputy Minister for Production and Fish Marketing Services; Waddah Al-Awsaji, Assistant Deputy Minister for the Traditional Fisheries Sector; Engineer Amin Barziq, Deputy Governor for Technical Affairs; and Engineer Yaslam Babalgom, Chairman of the Arabian Sea Fisheries Authority.

The program aims to enhance the capacity of national staff in the field of fishery monitoring and data collection, contributing to the development of an accurate information database that supports efforts to manage and promote the sustainable development of Yemen’s fishery resources.
